Elizabeth “Betty” Devenny (nee Chomin) died unexpectedly in Niceville, FL at age 72. Betty is survived by her husband (Col/Ret. Tom Devenny); her son Michael (Prosper TX) and his three children Jacob, Parker, and Eden; her son-in-law Mitchell Inness (Niceville FL) and his two children, Katelynn and Scott. She was preceded in death last year by her daughter, Kimberly Devenny Inness.
Betty was born March 1945 in Rome NY to Michael and Mary Chomin; and graduated Rome Free Academy and Syracuse Central City Business Institute. She married Tom just 48 years ago, when he was an AF second lieutenant, and traipsed around the country with him to Boston, Washington, Dayton—and finally to Niceville.
Betty was the love of Tom’s life. She thrived on the many challenges of military moves, but found it “nice” to settle in Niceville for 32 years. Betty and Tom loved cruising and celebrated their 365th day at sea on a recent cruise to Rome. Betty raised two great kids, loving every hour at Kim’s NWF softball games, and at Mike’s Niceville HS baseball/football games. To her 5 grandkids, she was “Mimi” and enjoyed watching these amazing kids at softball, archery, baseball, football, lacrosse, basketball games—and gym classes. Betty was an instant, special friend to everyone she met—at the thrift shop, book club, bunco, Simply Elegant Gourmet—or just at Walmart. Her beautiful and loving spirit just made you feel happy and loved whenever you were around her. She leaves a huge hole that cannot be filled.
A Memorial Mass will be held at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Niceville on Saturday, July 8th at 10AM with a celebration of life reception immediately following in the Parish Life Center. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Lady Eagles Softball Team c/o Niceville High School—where granddaughter Katelynn helped win the State Semifinals.
