Guy Brown Dunn, Jr., Lt. Col, USAF (Ret) passed away peacefully on Friday, June 2, 2017.  He was born December 12, 1922, in Bland, Virginia. After graduating from high school, he attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute until 1942, when he entered military service.  Guy completed aviation cadet training in 1944, and arrived in the European Theater just prior to D-Day.  Much of his World War II service was spent supporting General George Patton’s Third Army across France.  He flew a wide variety of transport and special mission aircraft throughout his 30-year career, amassing more than 11,000 flying hours. The highlight of his career was being a part of the Berlin Airlift. He was close friends with Col. Gail Halvorsen, the Candy Bomber, and tied many candy bars to handkerchiefs to parachute treats to the children of Berlin.  He also flew many transport missions during the Korean War and later the Vietnam War. His final military assignment was Director of Maintenance, 9th Air Force, Shaw AFB, SC.

Guy married Eleanor Hack in 1951, in Mobile, Alabama. This Air Force family moved to Guam, Massachusetts, Panama, Texas, and South Carolina before his retirement in 1972.  After a final move to Fort Walton Beach, Florida, Guy made a second career in carpentry and house construction. Many of the homes in Kenwood, Poquito Bayou, and Donlabrook bore his skilled touch.  As their children began their adult lives, Guy and Eleanor continued to enjoy travel, bridge, and family.Guy is preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Mary Dunn, his beloved wife, Eleanor, one son, Richard, his sisters, Jean Chapman and Carol Dunn, and his brothers, Donald Dunn and Karl Dunn. Survivors include his three children, Michael Brown Dunn (wife Jane, daughter Amanda), daughters Linda Dunn Gillette (husband Robert, daughter Katherine), Laura Dunn Pflug (husband William, son Stephen), his sister Katharine Harris and his brother David Dunn (wife Barbara).In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Lt. Col. Guy B. Dunn, Jr., to the Berlin Airlift Historical Foundation, PO Box 782, Farmingdale NJ 07727. The foundation is keeping history alive with a flyable C-54 Skymaster and exhibits about the Berlin Airlift.
