Betty Cope, known lovingly in her youth as Betty Jean, was born with a spark on July 4th, 1942. She was, and always will be, a daughter, a sister, a wife, a mother, a grandmother, and most recently a great-grandmother during her incredible 82 years of life. She passed away on Sunday, December 15, 2024 after a yearlong battle with cancer.
We will remember Betty for her loving nature, independent character, and her strong work ethic. She expected the best out of herself and others. She could be stubborn at times. She never let any of us leave her door without a warm embrace, and was always ready to plan a day of activities for all to enjoy. Betty was known for her generosity, regularly volunteering at her church, donating to charity, and giving back to her community. She helped women see their own beauty through Mary Kay cosmetics, helped people find their way home through real estate, and participated in missionary trips. She was strong in her faith and accepted God’s will. Betty devoted her life to helping others.
In her generosity, Betty was also known for her leadership and steadfast convictions. Every year, she made sure to host 5k runs, thank you breakfasts, and other charity events for her church. In her early years, she lived abroad with her husband during his service in the Air Force, often traveling alone with toddlers in tow. She was strong, and a force to be reckoned with, even towards the end.
Betty had a long and full life. She was born in Ethal, Mississippi to Herman Lindsay and Francis Adams-Lindsay in 1942. Betty had two younger siblings, Homer and Charles Lindsay. She met her husband to be, Lloyd Richard Cope, in Greenville, Mississippi while attending church in 1957 and they were married in October of 1960. She then went on to travel the world amid her husband’s service in the Air Force during which time she had two children, Debra Crabtree and Lloyd Richard Cope Jr. In 1967, Betty became a tax preparer for H&R Block and in 1977 managed a credit union in Plattsburg, New York. Beginning 1989 to 1995, Betty managed her brother’s seasonal Christmas store, Lindsay’s a Place of Christmas, and his gift shop the Mole Hole in Destin, Florida. From 1978 to 2019, Betty sold Mary Kay products and worked as a real estate agent with RE/MAX. Betty spent the remainder of her life enjoying time with her husband, talking her daughter into weekly ice cream outings, and playing with her great grandson at every opportunity.
Betty was preceded in passing by her parents Herman and Francis Lindsay, her brother Homer Lindsay, and her grandson Jonathan Crabtree. Betty is survived by her husband Richard Cope, her brother Charles Lindsay, her daughter Debra Cope-Crabtree, her son Lloyd Richard Cope, Jr., her grandchildren Benjamin Crabtree, Erin Cope, Elizabeth Smith, and Rachel Cope, and her great-grandson Andor Smith. We will all miss Betty dearly, but we are so grateful for the time we had to spend with her. We are blessed to be part of her family. We will always feel her presence in our hearts. She will live forever in our memories.
