Christopher James Eutchler passed away on March 19, 2023, in Gloversville, New York. Born in England on July 7, 1943, he was the son of Charles Arthur Eutchler and Vera Johnson Eutchler.
Chris was best known as an eccentric character. He was a man who wore many hats, told tall tales, and possessed a gentle soul of boundless generosity. He had the gift of lifting people’s spirits through his infectious laughter and stories that he wrote and shared with others throughout his life. Chris loved history and the mysteries that made up the fabric of America. He was enamored with tales about the Old West, Indians, and legends of lost treasure. During his life, his dusty boots journeyed across the United States, from New York to California and Washington to Florida, marking the territory with one huge X in pursuit of his dreams. America was his El Dorado.
Never judging a man by his face nor his money, Chris became as much a character as those he met up with and told tales about. After graduation from Fremont High School in Sunnyvale, California, he served his country in the Army National Guard. He rode the rails and camped with mountain men. He even shared a campfire with Fry-Pan Jack and discussed the nuances between hobos and tramps. Once he met a descendant of Annie Oakley while sitting in a bar and swapped stories over a pint of beer about his own ancestor, Calamity Jane.
He settled down in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, where he met the love of his life, Nell Dukes. Upon retirement, he moved to Albany, New York to be near her until the end of his life.
His stories continue to live on through his humorous writings. Even though he never found the treasure he was hunting for, he is the treasure that will remain in our hearts forever.
Chris is survived by his two sisters, Jacqueline Vera Reed and Elizabeth Jann Tayse, and their children, Ruth J. Hensley, Cherish I. Benson, Amanda McLawhorn, Angela Trusnik, Eli Tayse, and Robert E. G. Benson.
I'LL FLY A STARSHIP ACROSS THE UNIVERSE DIVIDE
AND WHEN I REACH THE OTHER SIDE
I'LL FIND A PLACE TO REST MY SPIRIT IF I CAN
PERHAPS I MAY BECOME A HIGHWAY MAN AGAIN.
OR I MAY SIMPLY BE A SINGLE DROP OF RAIN
BUT I WILL REMAIN
AND I'LL BE BACK AGAIN...
.....The Highwaymen.....
