Dewitt Brunson Obituary

Dewitt Brunson passed away in his home in Niceville, Florida on Saturday, January 8, 2022.

He was born February 17, 1955 to Joyce and Patie Brunson and lived in Niceville, Florida and the surrounding areas for his entire life. He has always been a family man—the oldest sibling who always took charge and was happy to lead the pack. Everyone that knew him looked to him as a role model. He knew the Choctawhatchee River like the back of his hand and spent many a day fishing the secret spots that only those closest to him were lucky enough to know.

Dewitt married the love of his life, Wanda Ward, in August of 1982. For the past 40 years, Dewitt and Wanda have cultivated a beautiful life full of love and joy. Their lasting relationship was the cornerstone of a legacy that will live on through their children and grandchildren. Dewitt lived life to the fullest right up until his very last day. He spent his final hours eating raw oysters and belly laughing with dear friends and family.

He was the best husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend around. He never missed an opportunity to tell you that you made him proud or to say how much he loved you. His heart may have been weak, but it was larger than life.  Dewitt never hesitated to let people know what they meant to him. A true extrovert who could strike up a conversation with anyone, he never met a stranger. He loved nothing more than to tell anyone who would listen about the family that he loved so fiercely.

Dewitt’s career spanned 42 years with Range Operations at Eglin Air Force Base. Dewitt retired as a technical support supervisor over the Electro-Optical Evaluation Complex in April of 2020. Since his retirement, he has been enjoying life to the fullest with plenty of time to enjoy the great outdoors and fellowshipping with those that meant the most to him.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Joyce Brunson, his granddaughter Avery Ogburn, and his nephew Kyle Brunson.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Wanda Brunson, his father, Patie Brunson, his children, Chris Brunson (Lindsay) and Carey Ogburn (Jeff), his grandchildren Wyatt(11), Blake (8), Madi (8), Libby (6), Porter (6), and Molly (3), his siblings Richard Brunson, Lisa Quigley (Allan), and Jason “Bully” Brunson (Shannon), his mother in law Doris Allen, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends that became family who meant so much to him.
