Efrain Cortés Obituary

Obituary

Efrain Cortés, of Niceville, Florida, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, February 20th, 2023, after living with cancer for six years, surrounded by family in his daughter's home in Roswell, Georgia.

A true Valentines Day baby, he was born on February 14th, 1946, in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, to Susana Diaz and Nicasio Cortés. He was given the name of Efrain, but answered to many others, such as Franky, Fran, Nene, Effi, Papi, Corky, SMSgt Cortés, and his favorite by far - Abuelo Guapo.

As a seven-year-old, Efrain, his mother, and his sister emigrated to Brooklyn, New York, where they met Raúl Calderon and his children, became a family, and made a home. He graduated from Boys High School in 1964 and attended Brooklyn Tech College before enlisting in the United States Air Force in 1967. He proudly served his country for 24 years, receiving many honors, awards, and accolades along the way. His military service allowed him to experience the world, taking him to multiple duty stations in the United States, as well as Alconbury, England, and Zaragoza, Spain. His favorite, however, was Sevilla, Spain, the place where he met and married his wife, Maria Josefa Reynel, better known as Pepi.

Upon retirement he moved his family to Niceville, Florida, to establish a permanent home. In 1993, corresponding with the opening of the Mid-Bay Bridge, he started a new career with the Florida Department of Transportation. Donning an orange vest, Efrain dedicated another 21 years of service to his community, striving to cultivate a great working environment and lasting relationships while overseeing the operations of the bridge’s toll plaza.

His greatest passion was running. You could see him every day, maintaining his perfect, steady pace alongside Highway 20 or taking part in the annual races crossing the Mid-Bay Bridge. Always in his tiny blue shorts and white headband. During these last six years, Efrain traded his running shoes for his trusted tablet, watching Westerns, playing chess, keeping up with La Liga soccer, and visiting with family and friends over video calls.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Maria Josefa Cortés. He is also survived by his sister Luz Cortés, his step-brother Luis Calderon, his daughter Vilma Cortés Yonnone, his son David José Cortés, his son-in-law Tony Yonnone, his daughter-in-law Aldona Tront-Cortés, and his two grandchildren Desi and Renzo Yonnone.

Anyone and everyone who ever had an opportunity to meet him and to speak with him, knew he was a good and honorable man. And once he considered you a friend, you were a friend for life.

We will always love you.

May you rest in peace. May you be free to run again.                      Queiro tu mucho Abuelo.

Obituario

Quiero tu mucho Abuelo.
