Grover Layne Obituary

Grover C. Layne 91, of Niceville, Fla peacefully passed away at home on December 15, 2021 surrounded by his family.

He was born to parents John and Hannah Branham Lane on January 21, 1930 in Pikeville, Kentucky.  He joined the United States Air force in 1952 at the age of 22 years old and served his country proudly for 20 years with tours in Korea and Vietnam.  Dad retired on August 1, 1972 as Staff Sargent at Eglin Air Force Base.

Dad was a well-known builder and painter for many years in the area.  He was one of the founding members of the “Boggy Boys hunting club” and spent many years enjoying hunting in this area and in Alabama.  He was also an avid fisherman and loved his fishing spot on the Choctawhatchee River.

Grover married Carol Ervin in 1958 in Ardmore, Oklahoma and they had 4 children together. He is survived by Carol Layne of Niceville, Fla.  Mark Layne and wife Vanessa, grandson Eric Layne of Cummings, GA. Terry Layne of Niceville, FL, Michael (Bo) Layne and wife Michelle and Grandson Michael Hunter of Choctaw Beach.

Julie Smith and husband Rick with Granddaughters Ashely Layne of Pensacola, Fl., Kayla Moody of Fort Walton Beach, Fl., Megan Moody of Colorado Springs, CO.  Great Grandchildren: Aaliyah Layne, Autumn Layne, Gage Velliquette, Jeffery Moody-Taylor, Ashlynn Moody, Shiloh Henry and Great Great Granddaughter Leilani Layne and his beloved dog and best friend Trixie.

Grover was preceded in death by his parents John and Hannah Lane, Sister Barbara and brothers Jessie and J.B. and Jimmy Lane of Virginia.

Dad wanted no formal funeral service. His cremation is being entrusted by Heritage Gardens. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to https://www.vfw.org/ways-to-help . Our family would like to extend our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to Twin Cities Hospital for always taking wonderful and loving care of our father. He loved each and every one there.  He always said it was like coming home with good friends and having best care around. A very special Thank You to VITAS hospice team and to Zillah Allen, RN who took such loving care of dad during his final days.  We are forever grateful.
