Ida Wedemyer passed away early Monday morning, November 1st, 2021, with both her sons by her side. She was 97 years old.
Ida was born in Csejd, Romania on March 19th, 1924. Her father, Gheoghe Voda, was from Romania, her mother, Rosalia Kiss, was from Hungary. She endured multiple occupations of her country during World War II, eventually spending time in West Germany after the war providing translation services to the U.S. State Department. In 1951 she came to the United States, settling in Rochester, New York, where she attended Rochester Institute of Technology. While in Rochester she met William (Bill) Wedemyer and they would eventually marry. In 1957 Ida and Bill moved to Coral Gables, FL, and shortly thereafter sons Tim (1959) and Bob (1960) were born.
Ida was a prolific and accomplished artist who painted and drew a wide variety of subjects and regularly displayed her art in shows in South Florida. Her works are owned by collectors in North & South America, Europe and Asia. Ida’s knowledge of several languages and her deep passion for the arts made her a vital member of her community. She also started and ran a successful garment manufacturing business for many years. Ida was very proud in March of 1970 when she became a United States Citizen.
In retirement, Ida served as a restoration artist and specialist to local antique shops. Her husband, Bill, passed away in 1990, and after 42 years in Coral Gables, Ida moved to Peachtree City, GA in 1999 to be closer to family. Subsequent moves were to St. Petersburg, FL in 2011, and Niceville, FL in 2018.
Ida is survived by her sons Tim (wife Robin) Niceville, FL, Bob (wife Lori) Columbia, SC, her four grandchildren, Jessica, Niceville, FL, Andrew (wife Katie) Ft. Walton Beach, FL, Christopher, Niceville, FL, Lauren (husband Jonathan Klett) Greenville, SC, and two great grandsons, Wyatt (Katie & Andrew) and Rowan (Katie & Andrew).
