Jewell was born Jewell Powell to Thomas Jefferson Powell and Ida Weeks Powell September 19, 1923 in Laurel Hil, Florida. The family moved to Niceville, Florida, then Boggy Bayou, in 1925 where Jewell grew up with her 4 brothers, James, Nolan, Thomas Jr. and William (Bill) Powell. She graduated from Niceville High School. There were not enough teachers available at that time due to World War II, and she was recruited and granted a special certificate to teach elementary education. She had fond memories of that experience and told comical stories of her time teaching.
In 1952 Jewell married Dewitt Franklin Sadler and one year later they had a son, Kendall (Ken) Dewitt Sadler. Eight years later, they had a daughter, Sandra (Sandee) Kay Sadler. Jewell worked in Civil Service at Eglin AFB, Florida in the Mathematical Laboratory and later in Real Property. She retired after more than 30 years of service and spent many joyous days out with her grandsons on adventures in the area.
Jewell was happiest when all of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were in her home and looked forward to large family gatherings. She also enjoyed fishing, shopping, both for herself and her family, and short trips to explore new places in the southeast.
She later married Clifton Smith and they had several years of joy until he also preceded her in death in 2019.
Jewell passed away on July 1, 2021 in Niceville Hospital with her family around her. She is preceded in death by her husband of more than 50 years, Dewitt, as well as her father, Thomas Sr; mother, Ida; and brothers; Nolan, James and Bill and daughter in law, Sharon Caine Sadler (Ken). She is survived by her brother, Thomas Jr.; son, Ken; daughter, Sandee; and Grandchildren, Brandon Jarrod Sadler (Christy) and William Dewitt Sadler (Tiffany). She is also survived by her many Great grandchildren: Kirstin, Liam, Connor, Channing, Evan, Taelyn, Emma, Javon and Rudy.
