Major James (Jim) Cassell, USAF Retired, 91 of Niceville, passed away peacefully at his son’s home in Crestview, Florida on November 16, 2024. Born in Dante, Virginia to Okley and Pearl Cassell, Jim led a life marked by service, faith, and love for others.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Janis, and his son, James Douglas Cassell, Jr. He is survived by his daughter, Susan Cassell, son David (spouse Diana), sister Barbara Brewer, 7 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
Jim graduated from East Tennessee State University and served 23 years in the Army Reserve, Regular Army, and the Air Force. During active service, he received the Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star, Air Medal, Vietnamese Honor Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, and several other decorations. After retirement, Jim worked at Eglin Federal Prison for 22 years, where he left such a lasting impression that he often received holiday greetings from former inmates. Jim also generously gave of his time, volunteering at Twin Cities Hospital, the Airman’s Attic, and Eglin Protestant Chapel where he and Janis attended for 46 years.
