Jill Carney Obituary

Jill Elizabeth (Plummer) Carney passed away peacefully in her sleep, after a brief illness, on July 7, 2025, in Dothan, Alabama. She was 54.

Born July 1, 1971, in Alton, Illinois, to Tom and Jane Plummer, Jill was a force—sharp, hilarious, endlessly curious, and full of big feelings, she never tried to shrink. She was also, most of all, a mother. Cecelia and Finley Carney were her everything—her joy, her pride, the reason she fought hard through the hardest days.

Jill graduated from Briarcrest Christian School, the University of Idaho, and the Methodist School of Nursing. She spent her career caring for others as a neonatal nurse and later as a Regional Overdose Prevention Specialist with the Memphis Area Prevention Coalition. Whether in the NICU or her community, Jill led with compassion, humor, and the kind of wisdom you can’t teach in a classroom.

She lived with a wide-open heart. Jill gave generously of her time, her words, and her laughter. She made people feel seen. Loved. Worthy. She gave nicknames, perfect one-liners, and really good advice. Her friendships were deep, her faith was strong, and her ability to distill truth from chaos was uncanny.

She adored music, books, and deep conversations. She shared her favorite songs and stories with the people she loved, often pulling them into her world with joy and passion. She loved the beach, her cats Frank and Beans, and the memory of Valencia, California—a place from her childhood she held with reverence for its light, beauty, and possibility.

Jill is survived by her daughters Cecelia and Finley, her parents Tom and Jane, her brother Tommy and his wife Lynn, and her niece and nephew, Julia and Will Plummer.

She died far too young, and the ache of her absence is sharp. But those who loved her know Jill wouldn’t want to be remembered with solemnity alone. She’d want music playing. Stories told. Laughter through tears. She’d want you to hug your people, speak your mind, and live with the kind of unfiltered honesty that made her unforgettable.

Family and friends are invited to gather and celebrate Jill’s life on Wednesday, July 16th, for a visitation at 10:00 a.m. with the funeral service to follow at 11:00 a.m. at Heritage Gardens in Niceville, Florida.
