Joan Mickey was born on August 3, 1937, to Wallace and Doris Barrett in San Antonio TX. Joan traveled the world as a child with her family, including England immediately following WWII, Okinawa, and many state-side bases. Joan graduated from Catholic High School of Montgomery and then worked at military bases where her father was stationed. While working at Keesler AFB, MS, she met and married the love of her life in 1960, George Walter Mickey who was in Electronic Warfare Officer training. While supporting her husband and traveling the world, Joan became a loving mother to six children: Pamela, Karen, Page, Jason, Shannon, and Joshua. Joan was the greatest mother and managed to balance school, church, and so many activities – swim team, baseball, softball, soccer, cheerleading, wrestling, scouts, etc. She volunteered in the schools and at every event she was in the stands cheering the loudest and encouraging every child. While raising her family, Joan pursued a bachelor’s and master’s in psychology from the University of Maryland. Upon completion of her degrees, Joan worked on the bases and in schools until her retirement. Joan was also very active with the Officer’s Wives Club at every duty station.
Joan loved animals and always had dogs, birds, rabbits, etc. She rescued many animals over the years. She was also a gourmet cook, and her children have many fond memories of family dinners and cherished recipes. She was also very creative and made all the girls’ clothes when they were young. Later she became an avid quilter and made many quilts for her children and grandchildren. She adored all her grandchildren and loved being Nana to them all.
She is survived by all six children: Pamela Anne Mickey, Karen Mickey Hess, Page Michelle Mansfield (Carey), Jason Matthew Mickey, Shannon Andrew Mickey (Zasha), and Joshua Wallace Mickey, as well as. 12 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, her sister Patricia Barrett, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her loving husband George, her parents Wallace and Doris, as well as her son-in-law, Jeffery Scott Hess.
"She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come." Proverbs 31:25
