Kathy Thompson of Niceville passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 13, 2022, after a period of declining health that she courageously endured. She was 75.
The daughter of the late Richard and Annabelle Hertling, Kathy was born in Redwood Falls, MN and grew up on a farm in Renville. After graduating from high school, she attended courses at the University of Minnesota-Morris prior to moving to St. Cloud in 1966. During a visit to Mpls/St. Paul, she met David Thompson. Their marriage and love story would span over 55 years, during which they raised a family and shared many travel and boating adventures – from King’s Cove “C” dock in Minnesota to Bluewater Bay neighborhood socials after moving to Florida in 2000.
Kathy loved her children and grandchildren dearly. She also enjoyed gardening, baking, reading, teaching Sunday school, decorating, researching the family tree, collecting coffee mugs from her travels, playing Mexican Train, and especially spending time with her grandchildren. Kathy built a successful professional career, working for several years in human resources as well as over a decade as an entrepreneur providing bookkeeping services prior to her retirement.
Kathy leaves behind her loving husband Dave; her daughter and son-in-law Terrie and Henry Harris and their son Ellis; her daughter and son-in-law Jodi and Victor Castillo and their sons Sam and Bryan; a sister-in-law Edna Fox; a sister-in-law Alice Thompson; a sister-in-law Cindy Hertling; a sister Marlene Hansen and her husband Rick; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Annabelle (1991) and Richard (1992) as well as her brother Lee (2021).
Her family would like to thank all of the neighbors, friends, professionals and volunteer staff that supported them during Kathy’s time in hospice.
Private memorial gatherings will be planned for family and friends in both FL and MN. Donations in Kathy’s name to the Alzheimer's Association are a beautiful way to remember her.
