It is with great sadness and broken hearts that we share the untimely passing of Commander (USN Retired) Peter L. Crist of Niceville, Florida. Pete’s passing on May 18, 2024 has made us aware of the tremendous new void in our lives. Pete was born January 12, 1968 in Tucson, Arizona to Richard A. Crist and Grace Shoup Crist. As part of a military family, he endured many moves, however, once his family arrived in northwest Florida, Niceville was home. After graduating from Niceville High School in 1986 where he excelled in both academics and band, he attended the University of Florida where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science. Upon graduation he was commissioned into the United States Navy where he spent significant time in the P-3 Orion.
In 1996, Pete returned to the University of Florida to teach Navy ROTC and earn his Master’s Degree in Business Administration. His last active tour of duty was Diego Garcia before entering the Navy Reserves until retirement with 26 plus years. During his time serving his country, in the USN Reserves, Pete worked for ASEC in Maryland converting the P-3 mission to the P-8.
Pete’s outgoing personality meant he never met a stranger and was loved by all who knew him. He was an avid NHS Eagle fan with season football tickets and loved to cheer on the Gators no matter the sport or that season’s record. Both of his nieces share his love of the Gators and have continued the legacy of becoming Gators, too.
Pete was preceded in death by his father Richard A. Crist. He is survived by his mother Grace Crist, brother Robert Crist (Shawna) of Niceville, two nieces Claire Bible (Jay) and Carly Crist along with many close aunts, uncles and cousins. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project (Woundedwarriorproject.org) or a charity of your choice.
