Ruby Dell Cook, age 80, affectionately known as “Grandmom”, passed away at her home in Niceville, Florida on Thursday, August 13, 2020 to her eternal home. She was born on May 11, 1940 in Samson, Alabama to Ardell and Jewell Harrison.
Ruby attended Edge Elementary School in Niceville, Florida and graduated from Choctawhatchee High School in Shalimar, Florida where she met her high school sweet, Richard Wade Cook. They worked together at the Drive-In Theatre in Shalimar, Florida. They were married on March 13, 1958 and spent 62 wonderful loving years together.
Ruby was a dedicated mother and homemaker and obtained her Cosmetology License in the early 1970’s. She worked with Jan Wilson and betty Willingham her first year and then became successfully self-employed with her own business, Styles by Ruby in Niceville, Florida. Eventually, she and her sister, Margie Nell Davis, went into business together as Styles by Ruby and Styles by Margie until she retired. She loved her job, the hair shows, and her clients.
Ruby was preceded in death by her parents, Ardell and Jewell Harrison, and her brother-in-law Chester Morris “Moe” Davis. On her husband’s side, she was preceded in death by Violet Grose (Albert), Opal Absher (Marvin), Garland Cook (Dolly), Harold “Bum” Cook (Opal), Garfield Cook (Vonceil), Samuel Cook (Mary Ann), Lucille McDuffie (Glennon), Gail Cook, and Winnifred Davis (Fred).
Ruby is survived by her daughter Lana Rochelle Henson (RJ), her twin sons Richard Wayne Cook and Randall Wade Cook, her grandchildren Richard Duane Cook (Lyndsay), Brandon Wade Cook (Casey), Timothy Cole Matthews, and Levi Harrison Matthews (Halle), and her great-grandchildren Colay and Cailyn. She is also survived by her sister Margie Nell Davis. On her husband’s side, she is survived by Henly “Joe” Cook (Sylvia), sisters-in-law Jaunita Cutlip, Mary Ann Burdette Cook, and Sylvia A. Vass Cook, and many nieces and nephews.
Family get-togethers for holidays and any occasion always pleased Ruby. She loved going on family vacations, camping, and fishing trips. It didn’t matter if it was sleigh riding in West Virginia, fishing on the river, or going to Crab Island to catch all kinds of seafood, as long as the family was together. She had a nurturing spirit that was warm and caring, a generous heart, could make you laugh until you cried, and was always ready to help anyone, especially family. Her kindness and compassion touched the hearts of many. She was passionate about gardening and cooking. She loved to go shopping with sister, Margie, and buy “Friday Prizes” for the family.
Ruby was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother (Grandmom), sister, and true friend. Our family was truly blessed to have her and she will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing.
