Obituary

Shirley Margaret Guthrie

September 9, 1934 – March 12, 2022

Shirley was born in New York to Robert and Margaret Flint. She was later to be raised by her mother Margaret Harris and stepfather George Harris. Shirley was preceded in death by her mother, father, brother, sister, her husband Johnnie (John) Guthrie and a daughter Julie Hoffman.

Shirley was married to Johnnie Guthrie from August 1953 until his passing in June 2006. She is survived by daughters Joyce (Kerry) Heriger, Judy (John) Patrick, Janice (Dan) MacNicol, Jean Guthrie, Jill (Adolph) Guerrero. Son in law Tony Hoffman (Julie’s husband), 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, several step grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

In 1971 Shirley and John moved their family to Niceville, Florida upon his retirement from the United States Navy. They lived in Villa Tasso until his death in 2006. Soon after Shirley moved into Niceville to be closer to her friends, family and her church.

Shirley was famous in her family for her delicious homemade peanut butter fudge. To this day she is still the best fudge maker. She was dedicated to her family and church. Shirley was a devoted member of the Crossroads Church of God which was located on Palm Blvd.

When volunteers were needed at her church she was right there to offer help, whether it was cooking and selling mullet dinners many years ago or baking fruitcakes to sell during the holidays. Giving was always in her nature.

Everyday she would talk to her daughters and wish them a good morning. The calls usually started around 5:30 am, when she woke up and had a cup of coffee and ended around 7:00am, about the time she was getting her breakfast.

Shirley’s daughter Jean lived with her and became her main caregiver after Shirley had a fall and was unable to walk. Recently they had plans to move to Tennessee to live with daughter Jill and her family so she could be close to her other daughter Judy and her family also. God had other plans for Shirley and she went to join him and her loved ones that had passed on years ago.

Shirley was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother and friend. Her life will forever be cherished in the lives of all who knew her.
