Susan was married to David R. Nelson in 1987 and together they had 1 child: Joanna Nelson. She worked as a teacher and in her free time enjoyed taking care of her family and friends, reading, and researching family genealogy.

Susan was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Jill Gunnels, and her brother, Richard Gunnels. She is lovingly survived by her husband David, daughter Joanna, and siblings Margaret Gunnels Jacob and William Ray Gunnels.
