Thomas Floyd, Sr. Obituary

Thomas G. Floyd, Sr. passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 30, 2025.

Tom was born in Kentucky and graduated from Black Star High School. He and his brother Johnny were known as “The Floyd Boys” because of their exceptional athletic ability.

He went on to graduate from Eastern Kentucky University with a B.S. degree. Tom was a lifelong fan of the University of Kentucky Wildcats basketball team.

His career with the federal government began in 1964 at the Naval Ammunition Depot in Crane, Illinois. From 1970–1975 he worked as an analytical chemist in the Flame, Incendiary, and Explosives Division of the Air Force Armament Laboratory at Eglin AFB, developing new flame agents.

In January 1975, Tom began work at the High Explosives Research and Development (HERD) facility where he conducted research on energetic materials. While there, he received a scientific achievement award and was awarded two patents. Tom authored 23 technical reports, earned four superior performance awards while at HERD. He helped site the Cruise Missile into England, and chaired many groups. He was a valuable asset to the Energetic Materials Branch at the HERD.

Tom and Myrtle shared a life filled with love, respect, and care. They loved each others company especially when fishing, camping, traveling, and swimming. He was a devoted and wonderful husband.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Johnny, his son Steven, his stepson Jeffrey, and his Scottish terrier boys, Angus and McDuffie.

He is survived by his wife Myrtle, “My Babe”; his sons Tom Jr. (Donna) and Michael; his daughter Pam (Nelson); his grandchildren Hannah, Kayla, and Landyn; and his sisters-in-law Dorcus and Mabel.
