Walter Glance Smith
July 15, 1929 – August 29, 2022
Walter Glance Smith, of Niceville, Florida, passed away peacefully in his home on Monday, August 29th in the company of his wife, Betty Sue McLendon, at the age of 93.
Walter was born in Chattahoochee, Florida to Obediah and Zadie Smith on July 15, 1929, and was raised in Alford, Florida. He attended Cottondale High School where he met his future wife of over 63 years and mother of his two children, Merle, before graduating and joining the United States Air Force. Walter went on to earn his degree in Electrical Engineering from Oklahoma State University and embark on a career in the USAF and Civil Service that took him from ‘plowing an ox to guiding a spacecraft’. He would also complete an M.B.A. from Florida State University specializing in Operations Research.
Walter had many hobbies and interests including construction, business, and philanthropy, but most important to him was education. He was an incredibly generous man who always made sure that his children and grandchildren had what they needed to pursue their education.
Walter is predeceased by his wife, Merle Smith; parents Obediah and Zadie Smith; sisters Jerral Wiley and Ladell Amos; and brother Princtiss (Bud) Smith. He is survived by his wife Betty Sue McLendon, daughters Pamela Smith and Cynthia McCafferty (Stuart), grandchildren Matthew Smith-Kennedy, Stephen Kennedy, Kevin McCafferty, and Allison McCafferty; and sister-in-law Murlene Smith.
Walter’s comfort at home could not have been accomplished without his home health care team. A special thank you to his caregivers Gennie, Daniel, Robin, and Alana from Santa Rosa Beach Private Care and Cassie and Angela from Vitas Hospice. These professionals provided much needed support and caring during the last few months.
Walter was buried on September 1st at Piney Grove Baptist Church in Cottondale, Florida next to Merle with family at graveside. Donations to the city of Niceville can be made in the Smith name to honor Walter’s life.
