William Osthoff Obituary

Lt. Col. William “Bill” M. Osthoff (Ret.), age 78, of Niceville, Florida, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.

Bill was born on October 22, 1947, in Kansas City, Missouri, the only child of William G. Osthoff and Jane Martin Osthoff. From an early age, Bill demonstrated exceptional intelligence, discipline, and leadership. He attended Center High School, where he proudly graduated as Senior Class Valedictorian.

His academic excellence earned him the distinguished honor of an appointment to the United States Air Force Academy, where he graduated in the top of his class in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Sciences. Bill continued his pursuit of knowledge and service by earning a Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology in 1972.

Bill devoted 22 years of honorable service to the United States Air Force as an Aeronautical Engineer, serving his country with unwavering dedication and integrity. His assignments included Eglin Air Force Base, Tyndall Air Force Base, and Yongsan Garrison in Korea, among others. Throughout his career, Bill earned numerous awards and decorations, including the National Defense Service Medal with one Bronze Star, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and the Air Force Commendation Medal—a reflection of his professionalism, dedication, and commitment to excellence.

Following his retirement from the Air Force, Bill continued to serve with an additional 22 years in the defense industry, including roles at BDM Management Services Company and The Analytic Sciences Corporation (TASC), a subsidiary of Northrop Grumman, where he contributed to the  AMRAAM program.  Regardless of the task at hand, Bill brought the same work ethic, humility, and sense of purpose that defined his military career.

Above all else, Bill was a man of love, kindness, joy, honor, and respect. He possessed a warm smile and infectious laughter, and he truly never met a stranger. Bill treasured time spent golfing with his friends at Rocky Bayou Country Club and with the Vagabons, traveling on family vacations, enjoying time with friends, and passionately cheering on his favorite teams—the Kansas City Chiefs, Air Force Academy Falcons, Florida State Seminoles, and Auburn Tigers.

Bill was deeply devoted to his family and found his greatest joy in them. He was especially proud of his role as “Papa Dude” to his grandson, Taylor, with whom he shared a special bond, a passion for aerospace, a deep admiration for the military, and countless cherished memories.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William G. and Jane Martin Osthoff. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Sharon Ann (Ballard) Osthoff; his daughter, Lisa Ann (Kevin Alan) Collier; and his beloved grandson, Taylor Alan Collier, and numerous nephews and nieces, all of whom will forever carry his legacy of love, service, and integrity.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Bill’s life at Heritage Gardens Funeral Home, 2201 Partin Drive, Niceville, Florida, on January 29, 2026, beginning at 11:00 a.m. A Celebration of Life will immediately follow at Rocky Bayou Country Club, 600 Golf Course Drive, Niceville, Florida. A private ceremony will be held at Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, Florida on January 30, 2026.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to a favorite charity in Bill’s memory.
